Monroe Township-based Ocean Power Technologies (OPT) has made a significant advancement in the maritime industry by demonstrating how its Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel, or WAM-V, can remotely attach itself to a buoy, enabling a charging connection. This achievement was unveiled through a video captured during on-water trials conducted earlier this month, showcasing the docking of the WAM-V to a buoy.
OPT Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing, Matt Burdyny, emphasized the importance of this demonstration, stating that it represents a defining moment for both OPT and the maritime technology sector. He further stressed that the achievement underscores OPT's commitment to reshaping autonomous maritime operations by leveraging renewable energy for sustainable charging solutions.
The successful docking of the WAM-V on-water by OPT sets the stage for a future where autonomous vessels can operate for extended durations. This opens doors to various applications within the maritime domain, allowing for more flexibility and innovation in the industry.
OPT CEO Philipp Stratmann praised the team's success in demonstrating remote docking that will enable charging capabilities. He expressed that this milestone propels the company towards realizing a future where sustainable energy and autonomous operations integrate seamlessly, reflecting a significant step forward in maritime technology.
