The North Atlantic right whale population is critically endangered, with fewer than 340 individuals remaining, and the survival of this species is at risk due to the threats of vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear. These whales have suffered a staggering loss, with 98 individuals dying or being seriously injured in U.S. and Canadian waters since 2017. Of particular concern is the small number of reproductive females, with only 70 left in the population.

Vessel strikes and entanglement pose the most significant threats to the survival of North Atlantic right whales. Vessel collisions lead to agonizing injuries that often result in death within a short time frame. On the other hand, entangled whales, burdened by hundreds of pounds of fishing gear, are unable to move freely, feed, or reproduce. This entrapment eventually leads to a slow and painful death from starvation or injury.

The North Atlantic right whale, critically endangered with only around 340 individuals remaining, faces grave threats from vessel strikes and entanglement in fishing gear.

To address this urgent situation, a call is being made to federal agencies in the U.S. and Canada. The aim is to strengthen protective measures and conservation practices for North Atlantic right whales. The call is directed at organizations including NOAA, the US Coast Guard, Congress, Transport Canada, and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Ocean. Proposed actions include enhanced enforcement of the 10-knot speed regulation in whale management areas, support for testing innovative gear solutions for fisheries operating in the whale's habitat, and increased transparency in cross-border collaborations for holistic conservation efforts.

The urgent plea is for individuals to join the cause and contribute to the protection of North Atlantic right whales. By addressing the increasing threats of entanglement and vessel strikes, these efforts can play a crucial role in the survival of this critically endangered species.
