These whales have suffered a staggering loss, with 98 individuals dying or being seriously injured in U.S. and Canadian waters since 2017. Of particular concern is the small number of reproductive females, with only 70 left in the population.

The call is directed at organizations including NOAA, the US Coast Guard, Congress, Transport Canada, and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Ocean. Proposed actions include enhanced enforcement of the 10-knot speed regulation in whale management areas, support for testing innovative gear solutions for fisheries operating in the whale's habitat, and increased transparency in cross-border collaborations for holistic conservation efforts.
